Fans vs. Faves

"I think the fans versus favorites setup is the ultimate challenge because we have the favorites who have obviously played the game before, coming in here with experience. But at the same time you have us (the fans) and we know their game. We know not only their strengths but weaknesses too. So I think that puts us at a huge advantage." ~ Alexis

Now, I am embarrassed to say that I have only seen maybe two episodes of "Survivor" in my lifetime. Judging from Alexis' quote though, it appears that she is suffering from the media trap known as "faulty beliefs". I am not sure if Alexis has come to the conclusion that the fans will win because of her being influenced by the media or if she has simply convinced herself that the fans will prevail.

Alexis' strong belief that the fans participating in this event will succeed over the favorites is a indicator that she may have been influenced by the media hence giving her "faulty beliefs". We either accept beliefs presented to us through the media or we construct our own ideals.

During the past few classes, we have discussed the meaning of media literacy and the impact that it has on individuals this day in age. The meaning behind this term is a set of perspectives we actively use to expose ourselves to the media in order to discover the meaning of messages we encounter. The goal of media literacy is to place the knowledge and ability in individuals to control media programming.

From viewing the 5th episode of "Max Headroom", it is obvious that the community is saturated with media information. The episode revolves around two television stations, Network 23 and Breakthru- TV, and their battle to gain the highest viewer ratings.

Terrorist attacks strike the city, and Breakthru-TV is one top of each story as it occurs. This results in a dramatic increase in the station's viewer ratings. In the end, Edison Carter proves that in an effort to increase their ratings, Breakthru-TV is supporting these terrorist attacks.

This episode relates to today's world in the sense that we are consumed with the media world. Television stations are constantly competing for the best possible viewer ratings. Much of the public is consumed with media influences such as the internet and television.
